Nunavut Energy Retrofit Program

Nunavut Energy Retrofit Progam

In terms of energy retrofit programming, Nunavut is divided into four regions: Baffin Region, Kivalliq Region, Kitikemot Region, and the city of Iqaluit. It is a vast territory of nearly 2 million square kilometers, one-fifth of Canada's landmass, encompassing a wide variety of ecosystems, geographies, local hunting and wage economies, natural resources, histories, dialects and opportunities.

City of Iqaluit

The city of Iqaluit is Nunavut’s capital.  The Government of Nunavut owns and operates approximately 60 facilities in Iqaluit including schools, health centers, offices, correctional facilities, shelters and residences. (link to city of Iqaluit website – www.city.iqaluit.nu.ca)  These buildings have a total annual utility bill of approximately $3.7 million (based on 2003 figures).  The Government of Nunavut intends to complete energy retrofit projects in Iqaluit as a pilot for projects in the rest of the territory.

Regions

Nunavut is made up of 3 regions with 26 remote communities.  The government of Nunavut owns and operates buildings in each community.  In general, each community has a school, a health center, a maintenance garage, a wildlife office and a government office operated by the Government of Nunavut.  These facilities are normally accompanied by community offices, a firehall and a community maintenance garage owned by the Hamlet.  All buildings in Nunavut eventually will be targeted for retrofit pending the completion of a successful pilot in Iqaluit.  The regions are made up of the following communities:
